Saturday leaving Queenstown at 9am to head to Bird River Track, where we will take our 4wd’s in as far as the information booth and then head on foot to East Pillinger, near Kelly Basin. The site of the old town is overgrown with lush, mossy forest, and only some rusting mining equipment and ruined buildings remain.
Along the walking track there will plenty of opportunities to take in this wilderness and get some gorgeous photos.
NO DOGS as it’s in the World Heritage area.
The walk in, which is close to the beautiful Bird River for much of the time, follows the line of an old railway that once serviced the mine. Old sleepers and the remains of rail bridges are remainders of this.

East Pillinger in it’s day had 1000 people once living in the former mining town.

The return walk can take 3/4 hours, 10.8km.
Track has some short steep hill sections, rough surface and many steps. Good footwear is essential. Back pack with lunch items and water. We will allow a full day for this event to accommodate for everyone’s fitness level.

Sunday leave Queenstown and head to Mt Huxley 4wd Track, it is approx 12k and can take up to 3hrs return, this will depend on track conditions and how many times we stop for photos. Mt Huxley track is rated hard because of the steep, rocky terrain at the summit end, this part is approximately 200m from the end of the track and if any driver doesn’t wish to continue there is plenty of space to pull up and take in the view. At the end of the track the trees have grown up so there is no view.

Camping will more than likely be at the Queenstown Caravan Park so everyone who is camping can leave the sleeping quarters set up or if wanting some luxury there are cabins. It will be up to the individual to book their own accomodation.
