SUMMARY:West Coast Run
DESCRIPTION:Saturday leaving Queenstown at 9am to head to Bird River Track\
, where we will take our 4wd’s in as far as the information booth and th
en head on foot to East Pillinger\, near Kelly Basin. The site of the old
town is overgrown with lush\, mossy forest\, and only some rusting mining
equipment and ruined buildings remain. \nAlong the walking track there w
ill plenty of opportunities to take in this wilderness and get some gorgeo
us photos. \nNO DOGS as it’s in the World Heritage area. \nThe walk in\
, which is close to the beautiful Bird River for much of the time\, follow
s the line of an old railway that once serviced the mine. Old sleepers an
d the remains of rail bridges are remainders of this. \n\nEast Pillinger
in it’s day had 1000 people once living in the former mining town.\n\nTh
e return walk can take 3/4 hours\, 10.8km. \nTrack has some short steep hi
ll sections\, rough surface and many steps. Good footwear is essential.
Back pack with lunch items and water. We will allow a full day for this e
vent to accommodate for everyone’s fitness level.\n\nSunday leave Queens
town and head to Mt Huxley 4wd Track\, it is approx 12k and can take up to
3hrs return\, this will depend on track conditions and how many times we
stop for photos. Mt Huxley track is rated hard because of the steep\, roc
ky terrain at the summit end\, this part is approximately 200m from the en
d of the track and if any driver doesn’t wish to continue there is plent
y of space to pull up and take in the view. At the end of the track the t
rees have grown up so there is no view. \n\nCamping will more than likely
be at the Queenstown Caravan Park so everyone who is camping can leave the
sleeping quarters set up or if wanting some luxury there are cabins. It
will be up to the individual to book their own accomodation.
